A aquaponia — system that integrates fish farming (aquicultura) with plant cultivation (hidroponia) in a closed loop — is the most efficient protein and vegetable production system per square meter available. Fish produce nutrients for the plants; the plants filter the water for the fish. The system operates with 90 to 95% water recirculation — without daily replacement.
A aquaponia allows producing tilápia and alface in the same structure, with double the revenue per square meter of standalone hydroponics. At small scale (20 to 50m²), it is viable for family production, school gardens and restaurants with their own garden. At commercial scale (500 to 5,000m²), it is the most resource-efficient system for food production.
When aquaponia is properly sized with a balance between fish load (stocking density) and plant growing area, we significantly improve the system efficiency, water quality, organism health and productivity. This segment can contribute greatly to job and income generation in Brazil.
Join our strategic actions to implement the best solutions in the Brazilian agricultural sector. Our activities, advanced studies and research cover 20 chains and the 255 segments of the national agro — from the grain chain to sustainable extractivism, including horticulture, fruit growing, livestock and much more.
The series Inovação Para o Brasil Produzir Mais was developed precisely to identify and implement the best solutions available in Brazil and worldwide, across the 255 segments of the agricultural sector — with accessible technical language, updated data and focus on practical results for producers, suppliers, policymakers and marketers.
1. Opportunities for Small Rural Producers
How to size and operate an efficient aquaponia system
An efficient aquaponia starts with the balance between fish load and plant area — a general rule of 1 kg of fish for 20 to 30 liters of water and 0.5 to 1m² of plant area. Tilápia is the species most used due to tolerance to variable pH and high nitrogen production.
✔ Tilápia or catfish — species most used in commercial aquaponia
✔ RAFT system (raft) or NFT for the plants
✔ N balance: 1 kg fish / 20 to 30 L water / 0.5 to 1m² plant
✔ pH 6.8 to 7.4 — balance point for fish and plants
✔ PRONAF and aquaculture credit lines for family aquaponia
The E-Book 01 — Manual Estratégico para o Pequeno Produtor Rural presents, in detail, the best solutions for the segment and the other 254 agro segments in Brazil — focusing on method, cost reduction and progressive growth from Agro 1.0 to Agro 6.0. Access now for R$ 50 →
2. Opportunities for Micro and Small Local Suppliers
What equipment aquaponia requires
Aquaponia requires fish tanks, plant channels and biofiltration systems — with complete kits from domestic to commercial scale.
Solutions by engineering area applied to the segment
Our activities, advanced studies and research cover six major engineering areas — and the chain demands solutions in all of them:
Electrical Engineering and Computing — control of oxygen, pH and system temperature;
Electronic Engineering and IoT — nitrate, ammonia and pH sensors;
Control and Automation Engineering — automatic pumps and filters;
Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering — integrated fish tanks and plant channels;
Renewable Energy Engineering — solar for pumps and aeration;
Data Science and Artificial Intelligence — management of biofiltration and integrated production.

3. Opportunities for Municipal Governments
How the municipality can support aquaponia and create a cluster of integrated production
Aquaponia is the most complete food production solution for small spaces — ideal for school gardens, community gardens and urban entrepreneurs.
✔ School aquaponia for environmental and food education
✔ PNAE with local tilápia and aquaponia vegetables
✔ Municipal IDM: aquaponia as an innovation indicator
✔ Aquaponia incubator for entrepreneurs

4. Opportunities for Small Agricultural Product Retailers
How aquaponia generates business for restaurants and the premium food market
The restaurant aquaponia garden — fish tanks with herb and leafy channels visible to customers — is the gastronomic concept with the greatest impact right now. A restaurant that produces part of the salad and the fish served within its own structure has a gastronomic experience differential that no external supplier offers.
For commercial producers, tilápia + premium lettuce aquaponia in 1,000m² generates R$ 15,000 to R$ 25,000/month with both products — far superior to standalone tilápia (R$ 4,000 to R$ 6,000) or standalone hydroponics (R$ 8,000 to R$ 12,000).
Products with high commercial potential
The main products derived from this segment for retail and local foodservice:
Tilápia de aquaponia— premium fish raised without antibiotics;
Alface de aquaponia— high-value leafy green;
Domestic aquaponia kit— edtech product;
Restaurant aquaponia garden— premium gastronomic concept;
Commercial aquaponia consulting— growing service;
Aquaponia school— training and capacity building.
Profiles of retailers and their specific opportunities
✔ Restaurants: on-site aquaponia as a gastronomic concept
✔ Commercial producers: integrated tilápia + premium leafy greens
✔ Kit manufacturers: domestic and commercial aquaponia
✔ Schools: aquaponia for environmental and food education
✔ Distributors: certified premium aquaponia products
✔ Consultants: aquaponia design and operation
Growth strategies for the local retailer
The aquaponia producer who sells tilápia directly to restaurants and alface to premium supermarkets has the highest revenue-per-m² model and the lowest input cost available — because fish and plants feed each other.
PRONAF and Pronampe cover systems. SEBRAE subsidizes training and market access.
