Biodigestion of Swine Waste: How to Turn Environmental Issues into Energy and Biofertilizer

September 01, 20266 min read

The swine waste is one of the biggest environmental challenges of pig farming — but also one of the greatest bioenergy opportunities in Brazilian agribusiness. A farm with 1,000 pigs produces an average of 10m³ of waste per day — raw material for a biodigester that can generate 500 to 800m³ of biogas per day, enough to supply all the energy for the farm and still export surplus.

The biofertilizer (effluent from the biodigester) has agronomic value superior to raw waste — with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium available in more accessible forms for plants, and without odor. A farm with 1,000 pigs produces biofertilizer equivalent to R$ 50,000 to R$ 80,000 in mineral fertilizer per year.

When the pig biodigester is properly sized and biogas and biofertilizer are fully utilized, this segment can significantly contribute to job and income generation in Brazil.

Join our strategic actions to implement the best solutions in the Brazilian agricultural sector. Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover 20 chains and 255 segments of national agri-business — from grain chains to sustainable extractivism, including horticulture, fruit farming, livestock, and much more.

The series Innovation for Brazil to Produce More was developed specifically to identify and implement the best available solutions in Brazil and around the world, in the 255 segments of the agricultural sector — with accessible technical language, updated data, and a focus on practical results for producers, suppliers, governments, and traders.

1.  Opportunities for Small Rural Producers

How to size and operate a pig biodigester for maximum energy and fertilizer generation

A properly sized pig biodigester starts with the volume of waste available per day — which determines the size of the biodigester, the hydraulic retention time, and biogas production. Correct sizing is essential to avoid wasting waste or having excess idle capacity.

✔    Canadian biodigester or covered lagoon — the most suitable for pig farming scale

✔    HRT (Hydraulic Retention Time) of 20 to 30 days — standard for maximum production

✔    Purified biogas for use in generator or furnace

✔    Biofertilizer with chemical analysis — product of high agronomic value

✔    PRONAF and BNDES for pig farming biodigesters

The E-Book 01 — Strategic Manual for Small Rural Producers presents, in detail, the best solutions for the segment and other 254 of Brazilian agribusiness — focusing on method, cost reduction, and progressive growth from Agro 1.0 to Agro 6.0.   Access now for BRL 99.00 →

2.  Opportunities for Micro and Small Local Suppliers

What equipment does the pig biodigester require

The pig biodigester requires retention structure, biogas purification, and biofertilizer pumping — equipment costing R$ 50,000 to R$ 500,000 depending on the scale.

Solutions by area of engineering applied to the segment

Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover six major areas of engineering — and the chain requires solutions in all of them:

Electrical Engineering and Computing — biogas generator; energy production control;

Electronic Engineering and IoT — biogas and CH₄ production sensors; remote monitoring;

Control and Automation Engineering — biogas purifiers; compressors; valves;

Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering — covered lagoon biodigesters; solid separators;

Renewable Energy Engineering — integration of biogas + solar for energy self-sufficiency of the farm;

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence — management of biogas production; carbon credits CBIO.

✔    Projects and installation of biodigesters for pig farming

✔    Biogas generators for energy generation

✔    Biogas purifiers for biomethane

✔    Chemical analysis of biofertilizer

✔    Carbon credits CBIO for biogas from pig waste

The E-Book 02 — Strategic Guide for Micro and Small Local Suppliers maps, segment by segment, the business opportunities — focusing on IoT, energy, automation, and specialized technical services.   Access now for BRL 99.00 →

3.  Opportunities for Municipal Governments

How the municipality can support biodigestion and environmental management in pig farming

The biodigestion of pig waste is the environmental solution with the greatest impact for pig farming municipalities — transforming the main environmental liability of the activity into an economic asset of energy and fertilizer.

✔    Collective biodigester program for family pig farmers

✔    Municipal biodigester for pig and domestic organic waste

✔    Municipal ID: percentage of the farm with biodigester and utilized biogas

✔    Biofertilizer program for local horticulturists

✔    Municipal carbon credits for waste biodigestion

The E-Book 03 — Reference Guide for Municipal Governments presents the step-by-step for municipal secretaries and managers to implement effective public policies for the 255 segments of agribusiness.   Access now for BRL 99.00 →

4.  Opportunities for Small Agricultural Product Traders

How biodigestion generates business for energy, biofertilizer, and carbon credit companies

The biogas from pig waste is the most abundant and lowest-cost feedstock for biomethane in Brazilian agribusiness — with potential to supply the fleet of trucks and buses in pig farming regions with locally sourced renewable fuel.

The CBIO carbon credits for the biodigestion of pig waste represent additional revenue of R$ 0.05 to R$ 0.15/m³ of captured biogas — and the regulatory system favors small and medium-scale projects, making the pig biodigester one of the best cost-benefit investments in agribusiness.

Products with high commercial potential

The main products derived from this segment for local retail and foodservice:

Design and installation of pig biodigester — high-value growing service;

Biogas generator — energy generation for farm self-sufficiency;

Compressed biomethane — renewable fuel for local fleets;

Pig waste biofertilizer — high-value agronomic product;

CBIO credits from biodigestion — carbon financial instrument;

Solid separator — nutrient concentrator from biofertilizer.

Merchant profiles and their specific opportunities

✔    Biodigester companies: design and installation for pig farming

✔    Energy distributors: biogas and biomethane from pig sources

✔    Carbon consultants: CBIO credits for pig waste

✔    Biofertilizer distributors: premium agronomic product for horticulturists

✔    Pig farming cooperatives: collective biodigestion for energy and fertilizer

✔    Biomethane companies: fuel for municipal fleets in pig farming regions

Growth strategies for the local trader

The business that offers the complete biodigestion package — project + installation + generator + carbon credit — to the pig farmer with calculated payback in years of saved energy has the business proposal with the highest conversion rate in sustainable agribusiness. The product pays for itself and still generates extra income.

The BNDES Green Fund and Pronamp finance biodigesters. The BNB/FNE provides support in the Northeast. The Pronampe covers biodigestion companies.
