Sugarcane: Energy, Sugar, and Bioelectricity in the Same Sugarcane Field

September 01, 20267 min read

The sugarcane is the most productive tropical crop in the world in terms of renewable energy per hectare — and Brazil is the absolute global leader, producing over 600 million tons per year on 9 million hectares. From the same plant that sweetens coffee come the ethanol that powers cars, the bioelectricity that lights up cities, and the by-products that feed livestock and supply the chemical industry.

The Brazilian sugar-energy sector generates over R$ 150 billion per year and directly employs more than 1 million people. Sugarcane is cultivated in all Brazilian states with tropical and subtropical climate — and small and medium producers have increasing access to the crop through partnership contracts with mills and sugar-energy cooperatives.

When the sugarcane chain is strengthened with technology, supply contracts, and diversification of by-products, this segment can considerably contribute to job and income generation in Brazil.

Participate in our strategic actions to implement the best solutions in the Brazilian agribusiness sector. Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover 20 chains and 255 segments of the national agro — from the grains chain to sustainable extraction, through horticulture, fruit growing, livestock, and much more.

The series Innovation for Brazil to Produce More was developed specifically to identify and implement the best solutions available in Brazil and around the world, in the 255 segments of the agribusiness sector — with accessible technical language, updated data, and a focus on practical results for producers, suppliers, government, and sellers.

1.  Opportunities for Small Rural Producers

How small producers can access the sugarcane chain through supply to mills

The sugar supplier model for mills is one of the most accessible ways to participate in a highly profitable chain without investing in processing. The mill supplies seedlings, technical assistance, and guarantees the purchase of cane — the producer provides land and labor. It is an integration model that works well for properties from 10 to 200 hectares.

✔    Supply contract with the mill: ATR (Total Recoverable Sugar) as the payment unit — not gross weight

✔    Most productive RB and CTC varieties for each region — the right choice defines productivity for 5 to 7 years

✔    Mechanized harvesting system: reduces cost by 60% vs. manual harvesting

✔    Renewal of sugarcane fields every 6 to 8 cuts — investment that maintains productivity

✔    PRONAF and BNDES lines for the implementation and renewal of cane fields

The E-Book 01 — Strategic Manual for the Small Rural Producer presents, in detail, the best solutions for this segment and other 254 of the Brazilian agro — focusing on method, cost reduction, and progressive growth from Agro 1.0 to Agro 6.0.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

2.  Opportunities for Micro and Small Local Suppliers

What equipment, technologies, and services the sugarcane chain continually demands

The sugarcane chain is intensive in large-scale equipment — but also creates a permanent demand for maintenance suppliers, automation, and specialized technical services in the field and in the mills.

Solutions by area of engineering applied to the segment

Our activities, studies, and advanced research encompass six major areas of engineering — and the chain demands solutions in all of them:

Electrical Engineering and Computing — industrial automation of mills, ethanol distillation control, and production management systems;

Electronic Engineering and IoT — real-time ATR sensors, fermentation monitoring, and load traceability;

Control and Automation Engineering — autonomous harvesters, georeferencing systems for plots, and loading control;

Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering — inspection robots for cooling towers, boiler cleaning systems;

Renewable Energy Engineering — cogeneration of electricity with bagasse; design and installation of bioelectricity systems;

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence — ATR forecasting models, harvest route optimization, and truck fleet management.

✔    Maintenance of sugarcane harvesters — high-demand and urgent service during the harvest

✔    Installation of cogeneration systems with bagasse — R$ 5 billion annual market in bioelectricity projects

✔    IoT systems for monitoring ethanol fermentation — high-value product for medium-sized mills

✔    Georeferencing and productivity mapping of sugarcane fields

✔    Biogas and biomethane projects from vinasse — emerging high-profit market

The E-Book 02 — Strategic Guide for Micro and Small Local Suppliers maps, segment by segment, business opportunities — focusing on IoT, energy, automation, and specialized technical services.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

3.  Opportunities for Municipal Governments

How sugarcane municipalities can transform cane into a motor of development and local energy

Sugarcane municipalities have one of the most stable municipal revenue bases in Brazil — through ITR, ICMS from the mill, and rural employment. The manager who strengthens the sugarcane chain creates jobs, attracts investments, and can structure green energy for the municipality.

✔    Bioelectricity from the mill for the municipality — low-cost renewable energy contract with local generation

✔    Biomethane from vinasse for the municipal fleet and school buses — zero-emission local fuel

✔    Municipal IDM: cane as an indicator of renewable energy, rural employment, and tax revenue

✔    Promotion of local artisan cachaça production — generating income and gastronomic identity

✔    Support for diversification with brown sugar and artisanal rapadura — income for small farmers

The E-Book 03 — Reference Guide for Municipal Governments presents the step by step for secretaries and municipal managers to implement effective public policies for the 255 segments of agribusiness.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

4.  Opportunities for Small Agro Products Traders

How the sugarcane chain generates business for distributors, traders, and the local fuel market

The sugarcane chain is the only one in agribusiness that produces six simultaneous products with guaranteed markets: sugar, ethanol, bioelectricity, biogas, cachaça, and industrial by-products. For the local trader, the most accessible niches are artisanal cachaça, artisanal cane products (rapadura, molasses, brown sugar), and cane beverages.

The market for premium artisanal cachaça is growing 15% per year in Brazil and 20% in exports. A bottle of artisanal cachaça aged in oak barrel can sell for R$ 80 to R$ 200 — while industrial cachaça sells for R$ 5 to R$ 15. This is the largest margin difference between artisanal and industrial products in the entire agribusiness chain.

Products with high commercial potential

The main products derived from this segment for local retail and food service:

Artisanal and premium cachaça — the fastest-growing distillate in Brazil; aged in barrel is worth 5 to 20× the industrial;

Brown sugar and artisanal demerara — high demand product in the natural market; 2 to 4× the price of refined sugar;

Rapadura and cane molasses — products of regional identity; high margin at fairs and emporiums;

Ethanol for cleaning and hygiene — a market that exploded post-pandemic; local distributors have stable demand;

Bioelectricity for local commerce — green energy contract with a nearby mill; reduces electricity bills;

Artisanal rum and premium aguardente — export niche; market for craft distillates in strong expansion.

Trader profiles and their specific opportunities

✔    Beverage distributors: local artisanal cachaça — high-value product with growing regional identity

✔    Emporiums and natural stores: brown sugar, rapadura, and molasses — high-margin artisanal products

✔    Street vendors: rapadura, molasses, and raw sugarcane — high turnover in markets in the Northeast and Midwest

✔    Hotels and inns: premium cachaça from the region for artisanal caipirinha — high impact gastronomic differential

✔    Pharmacies: certified organic brown sugar — growing health market

✔    Digital platforms: aged artisanal cachaça with origin — high engagement and export product

Growth strategies for local traders

The biggest opportunity for local traders is distilled artisanal cachaça — with added value 5 to 20× that of industrial cachaça. Partnering with a regional distillery for exclusive distribution in the city and region is a high-margin business model, low initial investment, and continuous growth in the craft market.

The BNDES finances the installation of distilleries and aging equipment. Pronampe covers working capital for stock of aged cachaça. SEBRAE subsidizes consultancy in artisanal cachaça certification and access to the export market.
