Agricultural Carbon Credit: How to Price the Environmental Services of Your Property

October 02, 20266 min read

The agricultural carbon credit — a financial instrument that monetizes carbon capture and emission reduction in agriculture — is the fastest growing product in the financial market of agribusiness. With the Brazilian Regulated Market for Emission Reductions (MBRE) being structured and the voluntary market growing by 30% per year, the producer who implements low-carbon practices today has access to a growing revenue stream in the coming decades.

The ABC+ Plan (Low Carbon Agriculture) created a portfolio of eligible practices for credit: no-till farming, recovered pasture, ILPF, IPF, ILP, organic soy, biogas, and planted forests. For each ton of CO₂ equivalent sequestered or avoided, the producer can issue a CBIO or VERRA/Gold Standard credit worth R$ 30 to R$ 150/tCO₂.

When the environmental services of the property are properly measured, verified, and certified, this segment can greatly contribute to job and income generation in Brazil.

Join our strategic actions to implement the best solutions in the Brazilian agricultural sector. Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover 20 chains and the 255 segments of the national agribusiness — from the grain chain to sustainable extraction, passing through horticulture, fruit growing, livestock, and much more.

The series Innovation For Brazil to Produce More was developed specifically to identify and implement the best available solutions in Brazil and worldwide, across the 255 segments of the agricultural sector — with accessible technical language, updated data, and a focus on practical results for producers, suppliers, government officials, and traders.

1.  Opportunities for Small Rural Producers

How to structure the carbon credit project on the agricultural property

The carbon credit project begins with the baseline — measuring the current state of carbon in the soil or emissions before the low-carbon practice. The difference between the baseline and the scenario with the practice is the eligible credit for issuance.

✔    Soil carbon measurement — analysis of organic matter before and after

✔    VERRA (VCS) or Gold Standard methodology — international standards

✔    Validation by an independent third party — carbon audit

✔    CBIO (biofuel credit) — specific for biofuels

✔    BNDES Green Fund and FIDC for carbon projects

The E-Book 01 — Strategic Manual for the Small Rural Producer details the best solutions for this segment and another 254 in Brazilian agribusiness — focusing on methodology, cost reduction, and progressive growth from Agro 1.0 to Agro 6.0.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

2.  Opportunities for Micro and Small Local Suppliers

What services and companies the agricultural carbon market demands

The carbon market demands project consultants, auditors, and traceability platforms — all experiencing rapid growth.

Solutions by area of engineering applied to the segment

Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover six major areas of engineering — and the chain demands solutions in all of them:

Electrical Engineering and Computing — carbon monitoring platforms;

Electronic Engineering and IoT — CO₂ and methane sensors on farms;

Control and Automation Engineering — emissions monitoring systems;

Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering — drones for biomass inventory;

Renewable Energies Engineering — solar and biogas for emission reductions;

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence — carbon prediction models; VERRA platforms.

✔    Agricultural carbon project consultants

✔    Certified carbon auditors

✔    Monitoring and traceability platforms

✔    VERRA, Gold Standard, and VCS methodologies

✔    Carbon credit brokers

The E-Book 02 — Strategic Guide for the Micro and Small Local Supplier maps out business opportunities segment by segment — focusing on IoT, energy, automation, and specialized technical services.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

3.  Opportunities for Municipal Governments

How the municipality can support carbon credits and create environmental revenue

The municipality that supports its producers in certifying carbon creates permanent environmental revenue that did not exist — transforming sustainable agricultural practices into a high-value financial product.

✔    Municipal carbon credit program for producers

✔    Municipal IDM: tCO₂ certified per hectare as an indicator

✔    Partnership with carbon brokers for regional projects

✔    Municipal aggregated agricultural carbon project

✔    Carbon Festival — education and tourism

The E-Book 03 — Reference Guide for Municipal Governments presents the step-by-step for municipal secretaries and managers to implement effective public policies for the 255 segments of agribusiness.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

4.  Opportunities for Small Traders of Agricultural Products

How carbon credit generates business for consultants and the financial market

The agricultural carbon project consultant who masters the VERRA methodologies and the ABC+ Plan has the fastest-growing service in agribusiness — with projects ranging from R$ 50,000 to R$ 500,000 and recurring annual audit revenue for 10 to 30 years of project cycle.

For the producer, the carbon credit from recovered pasture — which sequesters 1.5 to 3 tCO₂/ha/year — can represent an additional R$ 50 to R$ 300 per hectare without changing the production system. For a farm of 1,000 ha of recovered pasture, this translates to R$ 50,000 to R$ 300,000/year in new revenue.

Products with high commercial potential

The main products derived from this segment for local retail and foodservice:

VERRA carbon project for ILPF/ILP — R$ 50 to R$ 150/tCO₂;

CBIO for biofuel — RENOVABIO instrument;

Carbon credit from recovered pasture — R$ 50 to R$ 300/ha/year;

Carbon credit from no-till farming — R$ 30 to R$ 80/ha/year;

Carbon project consultancy — high-growth service;

Carbon monitoring platform — growing digital product.

Merchant profiles and their specific opportunities

✔    Carbon consultants: VERRA and Gold Standard projects

✔    Auditors: verification of agricultural credits

✔    Brokers: VERRA credits and voluntary market

✔    Producers: additional revenue from environmental services

✔    Buying companies: decarbonization via agricultural credit

✔    BNDES: Green Fund for carbon projects

Growth strategies for the local merchant

The producer who implements certified ILPF and registers a VERRA project has four simultaneous revenue streams: soy, livestock, timber, and carbon — transforming the same area into a portfolio of products that complement and protect each other from market fluctuations.

The BNDES Green Fund and private funds cover projects. Pronampe finances consultants. SEBRAE subsidizes carbon training.

The E-Book 04 — Strategic Guide for the Small Agricultural Products Trader maps 30 merchant profiles and details growth opportunities across all 255 segments of agribusiness.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →
