Hydrated Ethanol: Competitiveness, Sustainability, and Business Opportunity

October 02, 20267 min read

The hydrated ethanol is the fuel that sets Brazil apart from all other countries in the world — used directly in flex vehicles as a renewable alternative to gasoline, with a carbon footprint 70% smaller and a historically more competitive price. By 2025, over 80% of new vehicles sold in Brazil will be flex — a fleet of more than 50 million cars that can be fueled with ethanol.

Hydrated ethanol produces more than 28 billion liters per year in Brazil. The competitive price compared to gasoline depends on the 70% parity — when ethanol costs less than 70% of gasoline, it is more advantageous to refuel with ethanol. In the producing regions, this parity favors ethanol for most of the year.

When hydrated ethanol is at a favorable parity point and the flex fleet is high, this segment can contribute significantly to job and income generation in Brazil.

Join our strategic actions for the implementation of the best solutions in the Brazilian agricultural sector. Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover 20 chains and the 255 segments of the national agro — from the grain chain to sustainable extraction, passing through horticulture, fruit growing, livestock, and much more.

The series Innovation for Brazil to Produce More was developed precisely to identify and implement the best available solutions in Brazil and the world, in the 255 segments of the agricultural sector — with accessible technical language, updated data, and a focus on practical results for producers, suppliers, governments, and marketers.

1.  Opportunities for Small Rural Producers

How the sugarcane producer maximizes returns with hydrated ethanol in the spot market

The sugarcane producer supplying to the mill with flexible sugar × ethanol mix captures the benefit of the most profitable product at each moment of the harvest. Hydrated ethanol tends to be more attractive when oil prices are high and when the flex fleet demands more — increasingly frequent situations.

✔    Monitor the ethanol × gasoline parity to understand the mill's most profitable mix

✔    Freshly harvested cane delivered quickly — cane stored for more than 48 hours loses yield in ethanol

✔    High sucrose cultivars for regions inclined towards ethanol

✔    Supply contract with a participation clause in the mix — ensures benefit from the best product

✔    RENOVABIO certification for decarbonization credits — additional revenue per ton of avoided CO₂

The E-Book 01 — Strategic Manual for the Small Rural Producer presents, in detail, the best solutions for the segment and the other 254 of Brazilian agro — focusing on methodology, cost reduction, and progressive growth from Agro 1.0 to Agro 6.0.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

2.  Opportunities for Micro and Small Local Suppliers

What services the hydrated ethanol chain demands for distribution and quality

The hydrated ethanol chain has specific demand for quality analysis and fuel distribution services — especially to ensure compliance with ANP regulations.

Solutions by area of engineering applied to the segment

Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover six major areas of engineering — and the chain demands solutions in all of them:

Electrical Engineering and Computing — tax measurement systems for ethanol; automation of fuel pumps;

Electronic Engineering and IoT — alcohol content and temperature sensors; batch traceability via RFID;

Control and Automation Engineering — distillation column control and rectification for content >96% v/v;

Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering — systems for transferring and pumping ethanol;

Renewable Energy Engineering — RENOVABIO: carbon credit measurement system per liter produced;

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence — regional demand forecasting for ethanol; logistics distribution optimization.

✔    Ethanol quality analysis for compliance with ANP — high-demand laboratory service

✔    Calibration of pumps for hydrated ethanol

✔    RENOVABIO projects — carbon credits for renewable ethanol production

✔    Traceability systems for ethanol from field to station

✔    Ethanol storage tanks for regional distributors

The E-Book 02 — Strategic Guide for the Micro and Small Local Supplier maps, segment by segment, the business opportunities — focusing on IoT, energy, automation, and specialized technical services.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

3.  Opportunities for Municipal Governments

How municipalities can use hydrated ethanol to reduce costs and emissions

Municipalities with flex fleets and nearby producing mills can save 25 to 40% on fuel costs for the municipal fleet by using hydrated ethanol — with carbon emissions 70% lower than gasoline.

✔    Conversion of the municipal fleet to hydrated ethanol — immediate fuel savings

✔    Partnership with a local mill for ethanol supply to the municipal fleet

✔    RENOVABIO carbon credits for the municipality — additional revenue for decarbonization

✔    PNAE: school transport with ethanol — sustainability in the school food chain

✔    Municipal IDM: CO₂ emissions from the municipal fleet as a sustainability indicator

The E-Book 03 — Reference Guide for Municipal Governments presents the step-by-step for secretaries and municipal managers to implement effective public policies for the 255 segments of agro.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

4.  Opportunities for Small Agricultural Product Merchants

How hydrated ethanol generates opportunities for gas stations, distributors, and automotive services

The gas station that works with ethanol from the local mill has acquisition costs 5 to 15% lower than the station that buys from the large distributors — a competitive advantage that can be passed on to consumers as a price differential or retained as additional margin.

Automotive services — mechanics, dealerships, and tire shops — have increasing opportunities with the maintenance of flex cars adapted to ethanol: injection systems, fuel pumps, and specific ethanol sensors require specialized parts and technical services.

Products with high commercial potential

The main products derived from this segment for local retail and foodservice:

Hydrated ethanol for flex fleet— high volume fuel; better margin than gasoline in producing regions;

Ethanol for ambulances and public fleets— municipal supply contracts; stable revenue;

Additives for ethanol (lubricants)— complementary high-margin product for stations;

Ethanol quality analysis— laboratory service for stations and distributors;

RENOVABIO credits— carbon financial product for mills and distributors;

Ethanol for microdistilleries— base ingredient for cachaça, rum, and local artisanal spirits.

Merchant profiles and their specific opportunities

✔    Gas stations: ethanol from local mill — cost 5 to 15% below national distributor

✔    Regional distributors: hydrated ethanol for partner station network — guaranteed volume with own margin

✔    Mechanics: specialized services for ethanol engines — growing demand from flex fleet

✔    Laboratories: ethanol quality analysis for ANP — niche service with high compensation

✔    Municipalities: ethanol for municipal fleet — savings of 25 to 40% on fuel

✔    Microdistilleries: hydrated ethanol as a base for artisanal cachaça — source differential

Growth strategies for the local merchant

The gas station or distributor that establishes direct contracts with the mill has the greatest competitive advantage in the interior fuel market: lower cost price and simplified logistics. This advantage can be used to win customers from competing stations or to increase margin without sacrificing price to the consumer.

The BNDES finances tanks and distribution systems. The Pronampe covers working capital for inventory. Cooperatives of interior stations often negotiate collectively with mills to obtain more competitive prices.
