Eucalyptus: From Pulp to Charcoal — How to Profit from the Most Planted Forest in Brazil

October 02, 20266 min read

The eucalyptus is the most planted forest species in Brazil — with over 8 million hectares in commercial plantations, it is the foundation of the largest pulp and paper industry in the world, of the charcoal in the mining metallurgy, and of a growing market for solid wood and high-quality furniture. Brazilian eucalyptus has the highest productivity per hectare on the planet: 40 to 70 m³/ha/year vs. 10 to 15 m³ in temperate countries.

The eucalyptus market is diversified — pulp (Arauco, Suzano, Klabin), charcoal (Gerdau, ArcelorMittal), posts and sawn wood have distinct and complementary demands. The small and medium producer who plants eucalyptus with support from a pulp company has guaranteed income with very low risk.

When eucalyptus is planted with high productivity genetic material and managed with technique, this segment can contribute greatly to job and income generation in Brazil.

Participate in our strategic actions for the implementation of the best solutions in the Brazilian agricultural sector. Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover 20 chains and 255 segments of the national agro — from the grain chain to sustainable extraction, passing through horticulture, fruit growing, livestock, and much more.

The series Innovation for Brazil to Produce More was developed specifically to identify and implement the best solutions available in Brazil and around the world, across the 255 segments of the agricultural sector — with accessible technical language, updated data, and a focus on practical results for producers, suppliers, government officials, and traders.

1.  Opportunities for Small Rural Producers

How to produce eucalyptus with high productivity and access to the best market

The productivity of eucalyptus starts with the right genetic material for the climate — clones of E. urophylla × E. grandis have a productivity of 40 to 55 m³/ha/year in the Cerrado and Southeast. The spacing (3×3m to 3×2m) and the planting fertilization are the other two critical factors.

✔    High productivity clones: GG100, VM01, H13 — adapted to each region

✔    Spacing 3×2m for energy wood; 3×3m for solid wood

✔    Planting fertilization: NPK + boron + zinc — defines performance in the first 2 years

✔    Forest support from Suzano, Klabin, Fibria — working capital and guaranteed purchase

✔    PRONAF Forest and BNDES Forest for plantings

The E-Book 01 — Strategic Manual for the Small Rural Producer presents, in detail, the best solutions for this segment and the other 254 of Brazilian agro — focusing on methods, cost reduction, and progressive growth from Agro 1.0 to Agro 6.0.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

2.  Opportunities for Local Micro and Small Suppliers

What equipment and services does eucalyptus forestry demand

The eucalyptus chain demands forestry services, harvesting, and forest transportation — permanent and high-volume markets.

Solutions by area of engineering applied to the segment

Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover six large areas of engineering — and the chain demands solutions in all of them:

Electrical Engineering and Computing — monitoring systems for forest plantations;

Electronic Engineering and IoT — NDVI sensors for growth monitoring;

Control and Automation Engineering — forestry harvesters and forwarders;

Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering — forest tractors; cranes; transport vehicles;

Renewable Energy Engineering — eucalyptus biomass for electric energy;

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence — digital forest inventory; models of growth by clone.

✔    Harvesters and forwarders for mechanized eucalyptus harvesting

✔    Forest inventory by drone and artificial intelligence

✔    Soil analysis for fertilization plans

✔    Forest support from pulp companies

✔    Consulting in eucalyptus management for small producers

The E-Book 02 — Strategic Guide for the Micro and Small Local Supplier maps, segment by segment, the business opportunities — focusing on IoT, energy, automation, and specialized technical services.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

3.  Opportunities for Municipal Governments

How the municipality can support eucalyptus and create a forest hub

Eucalyptus generates stable income for municipalities in the Cerrado, Southeast, and South — with forestry support projects that do not require expenditure from the producer.

✔    Municipal forest support program with high productivity clones

✔    Partnership with pulp companies for regional forest support

✔    Municipal IDM: hectares of certified forest as an indicator

✔    Eucalyptus biomass for municipal energy

✔    Registration of carbon credits for forest planting

The E-Book 03 — Reference Guide for Municipal Governments presents the step-by-step for secretaries and municipal managers to implement effective public policies for the 255 segments of agro.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

4.  Opportunities for Small Agricultural Product Merchants

How eucalyptus generates business for suppliers of inputs and forestry services

The market for forestry inputs for eucalyptus — clonal seedlings, forestry fertilizers, herbicides, and forest consulting — generates over R$ 5 billion annually in Brazil. The supplier who masters logistics in remote areas has a competitive advantage over large distributors.

For the energy biomass market, the tips and residues of eucalyptus represent additional income of R$ 15 to R$ 30/ton — a product that goes to thermoelectric plants, cement companies, and the wood pellets market.

Products with high commercial potential

The main products derived from this segment for local retail and foodservice:

High productivity clonal seedlings — an essential high-value input;

Specific forestry fertilizers — high volume market;

Mechanized harvesting service — harvester and forwarder;

Eucalyptus biomass and pellets — renewable energy;

Eucalyptus charcoal — metallurgy and barbecue;

Sawn eucalyptus wood — furniture and construction.

Merchant profiles and their specific opportunities

✔    Forest nurseries: high productivity clonal seedlings

✔    Input distributors: forestry fertilizers and herbicides

✔    Harvesting companies: harvesters and forwarders for eucalyptus

✔    Charcoal industry: eucalyptus for metallurgy and premium barbecue

✔    Sawmills: solid eucalyptus wood for construction

✔    Carbon credit: certification of forest plantations

Growth strategies for local merchants

The producer who integrates forest support + charcoal + carbon credit has three sources of income from the same eucalyptus: the pulp company buys the wood, the metallurgy buys the charcoal, and the carbon market compensates for CO₂ sequestration. Zero waste and maximum income per hectare.

The PRONAF Forest and BNDES Forest cover plantations. The Pronampe finances suppliers. The Amazônia Fund supports forest carbon credit projects.

The E-Book 04 — Strategic Guide for the Small Agricultural Product Merchant maps 30 merchant profiles and details growth opportunities across all 255 segments of agro.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →
