IPF: Livestock-Forest Integration — Shade, Animal Comfort, and Wood in the Same System

October 02, 20266 min read

The Livestock-Forest Integration (LFI) — silvopastoral system — is the model that introduces forest components into pasture without crops, with the aim of improving animal comfort (shade), increasing pasture productivity, and generating timber revenue over the cycle. It is especially suitable for ranchers who do not want or cannot work with crops.

The scientific results of LFI are significant: cattle with access to shade have a weight gain 8 to 15% higher in the summer, dairy cows produce 10 to 20% more milk, and calf mortality due to thermal stress drops significantly. The tree pays its implementation costs in animal productivity before it has timber value.

When LFI is planned with valuable wood species and appropriate arrangements for livestock, this segment can greatly contribute to job and income generation in Brazil.

Join our strategic actions to implement the best solutions in the Brazilian agricultural sector. Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover 20 chains and the 255 segments of the national agro — from the grain chain to sustainable extraction, through horticulture, fruit growing, livestock farming, and much more.

The series Innovation For Brazil to Produce More was developed precisely to identify and implement the best available solutions in Brazil and around the world, across the 255 segments of the agricultural sector — with accessible technical language, updated data, and a focus on practical results for producers, suppliers, governments, and marketers.

1.  Opportunities for Small Rural Producers

How to implement LFI with the correct species and arrangement that preserves pasture

An efficient LFI uses double rows of eucalyptus or teak spaced 10 to 15m apart — which allows the Brachiaria pasture to remain productive between the rows, with partial shade that improves comfort without reducing forage production.

✔    Eucalyptus in rows spaced 10 to 15m apart — shade without harming pasture

✔    Teak or mahogany at greater spacings — higher timber value at cut

✔    Brachiaria brizantha as pasture between the rows

✔    Density: 100 to 300 trees/ha — balance between shade and pasture

✔    BNDES ABC+ and Crop Plan for LFI

The E-Book 01 — Strategic Manual for the Small Rural Producer presents, in detail, the best solutions for this segment and 254 others in the Brazilian agro — focusing on method, cost reduction, and progressive growth from Agro 1.0 to Agro 6.0.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

2.  Opportunities for Micro and Small Local Suppliers

What services and equipment does LFI require

LFI requires quality seedlings, forestry planting, and integrated consulting — with increasing veterinary services for animal welfare.

Solutions by engineering area applied to the segment

Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover six major areas of engineering — and the chain requires solutions in all of them:

Electrical Engineering and Computing — thermal monitoring of animals in LFI;

Electronic Engineering and IoT — temperature and animal comfort sensors;

Control and Automation Engineering — irrigation in LFI;

Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering — forestry harvesters for thinning in LFI;

Renewable Energy Engineering — biomass from thinning for energy;

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence — growth and productivity models for LFI.

✔    Forestry seedlings for LFI

✔    Animal welfare monitoring in LFI

✔    Forestry inventory for carbon credit

✔    FSC certification for LFI

The E-Book 02 — Strategic Guide for the Micro and Small Local Supplier maps, segment by segment, the business opportunities — focusing on IoT, energy, automation, and specialized technical services.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

3.  Opportunities for Municipal Governments

How the municipality can support LFI and create welfare livestock farming

LFI is the most accessible animal welfare strategy in extensive livestock farming — and the municipality that supports its adoption creates a quality meat differential with reduced environmental impact.

✔    LFI program with technical assistance and subsidized seedlings

✔    Municipal IDM: percentage of pastures with forestry component

✔    Carbon credit for certified LFI

✔    Certification of animal welfare meat from LFI

✔    PNAE with meat from certified LFI farms

The E-Book 03 — Reference Guide for Municipal Governments presents a step-by-step process for secretaries and municipal managers to implement effective public policies for the 255 segments of agro.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

4.  Opportunities for Small Agricultural Product Dealers

How LFI generates business for seedling suppliers and the welfare market

LFI with teak or mahogany generates revenue from thinning every 5 years and final cut revenue in 20 to 25 years — in addition to the permanent revenue from livestock farming. It is the land use system with the highest total return in the long term for beef and dairy farmers.

For the premium meat market with animal welfare certification, LFI is the system that ensures compliance with the shade and comfort criteria required by international certifications — opening doors to the European welfare meat market.

Products with high commercial potential

The main products derived from this segment for local retail and food service:

Consulting in LFI — planning and implementation;

Eucalyptus or teak wood from thinning — intermediate revenues;

Welfare certified meat — access to premium markets;

Carbon credits from LFI — complementary revenue;

Forestry seedlings for LFI — high growth market;

FSC certification for LFI — market differential.

Profiles of traders and their specific opportunities

✔    LFI consultants: integrated silvopastoral planning

✔    Seedling suppliers: forestry species for LFI

✔    Ranchers: productivity increase with welfare

✔    Certifiers: animal welfare and carbon in LFI

✔    Meat exporters: LFI as a market differential in Europe

✔    BNDES: ABC+ financing for LFI

Growth strategies for local traders

The rancher who implements LFI with teak on 30% of the area has shade for the herd (increasing average daily gain), revenue from thinning every 5 years, and harvesting of high-value wood in the long term — without reducing the stocking rate of cattle in the system.

The BNDES ABC+ and Pronamp cover LFI. The Pronampe finances consultants and nurseries.

The E-Book 04 — Strategic Guide for the Small Agricultural Product Dealer maps 30 trader profiles and details growth opportunities in all 255 segments of agro.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →
