Castor Bean: Industrial Oil, Lubricants and Biodiesel — The Oilseed for Semiarid Regions

October 02, 20266 min read

The castor bean (Ricinus communis) is the oilseed adapted to the northeastern semi-arid region — drought-tolerant and productive in low-fertility soils. Castor oil (ricin oil) has unique properties among vegetable oils: it is soluble in alcohol, has high viscosity, and does not freeze in cold — characteristics that make it irreplaceable in aviation lubricants, cosmetics, biodegradable plastics, and varnishes.

Brazil was the world's largest exporter of castor oil — and has the potential to regain leadership with programs such as PRONAF Mamona, which supports family farming in semi-arid areas. Premium castor oil for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals has a price 3 to 5 times higher than industrial oil for biodiesel.

When castor is cultivated with high-yield varieties and the oil is processed with quality, this segment can greatly contribute to job and income generation in Brazil.

Join our strategic actions to implement the best solutions in the Brazilian agricultural sector. Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover 20 chains and the 255 segments of the national agro — from the grain chain to sustainable extractivism, passing through horticulture, fruit growing, livestock, and much more.

The series Innovation For Brazil To Produce More was developed precisely to identify and implement the best available solutions in Brazil and worldwide, in the 255 segments of the agricultural sector — with accessible technical language, updated data, and focus on practical results for producers, suppliers, governors, and marketers.

1.  Opportunities for Small Rural Producers

How to produce quality castor for the premium and industrial oil market

Quality castor starts with high-yield oil varieties — BRS Nordestina, BRS Paraguaçu, and AL Guarany 2002 have productivity of 1,500 to 2,500 kg/ha, vs. 600 to 800 kg of older cultivars.

✔    Varieties: BRS Nordestina, BRS Paraguaçu — 45 to 48% oil

✔    Spacing: 3×2m to 4×2m — adapted for intercropping with beans

✔    Castor + cowpea intercrop — double income in the semi-arid

✔    Dry harvest: wait for capsule dehiscence

✔    PRONAF Mamona and BNB/FNE for northeastern semi-arid

The E-Book 01 — Strategic Manual for the Small Rural Producer presents, in detail, the best solutions for this segment and the other 254 of Brazilian agriculture — focusing on method, cost reduction, and progressive growth from Agro 1.0 to Agro 6.0.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

2.  Opportunities for Local Micro and Small Suppliers

What equipment does the castor chain demand

Castor demands peelers, expeller presses, and oil refiners — equipment that transforms raw castor into high-value industrial product.

Solutions by area of engineering applied to the segment

Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover six major areas of engineering — and the chain demands solutions in all of them:

Electrical Engineering and Computing — expeller presses and castor oil refiners;

Electronic Engineering and IoT — acidity and viscosity sensors for oil;

Control and Automation Engineering — castor peelers;

Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering — castor oil bottling machines;

Renewable Energy Engineering — solar for processing in semi-arid;

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence — traceability and production management.

✔    Castor peelers for cooperatives

✔    Expeller presses for castor oil

✔    Castor oil refiners

✔    Quality analysis for cosmetic and pharmaceutical use

✔    Castor cooperatives in the Northeast

The E-Book 02 — Strategic Guide for the Micro and Small Local Supplier maps, segment by segment, business opportunities — focusing on IoT, energy, automation, and specialized technical services.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

3.  Opportunities for Municipal Governments

How municipalities can support castor and create sustainable semi-arid income

Castor is the crop most adapted to the semi-arid for income generation — and the manager who supports oil processing cooperatives transforms dryness into wealth.

✔    Castor cooperative with community peeler and press

✔    Municipal IDM: locally processed castor as an indicator

✔    PRONAF Mamona for semi-arid family farming

✔    Partnership with the cosmetics industry for certified castor oil

✔    Castor biodiesel for the municipal fleet

The E-Book 03 — Reference Guide for Municipal Governments presents the step-by-step for secretaries and municipal managers to implement effective public policies for the 255 segments of agro.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

4.  Opportunities for Small Agricultural Product Retailers

How castor generates business for cosmetics, lubricants, and biodiesel

The purified cosmetic castor oil is sold for R$ 15 to R$ 40/kg to cosmetics industries — being a base for lipsticks, creams, shampoos, and hair products. A castor cooperative with a refiner produces R$ 50,000 to R$ 200,000/year of cosmetic oil with local raw material.

The castor biodiesel has unique fluidity properties at low temperatures — and the growing mandate for biodiesel in Brazil creates a permanent high-volume market for northeastern production.

Products with high commercial potential

The main products derived from this segment for local retail and foodservice:

Purified cosmetic castor oil— R$ 15 to R$ 40/kg; cosmetics;

Castor biodiesel— growing guaranteed market;

Castor oil for lubricants— aviation and industry;

Pharmaceutical castor oil— high-value product;

Castor cake— organic fertilizer;

Castor polymer— emerging bioplastic.

Profiles of traders and their specific opportunities

✔    Northeastern cooperatives: castor oil for cosmetics

✔    Cosmetics industry: castor as a base for lipsticks and creams

✔    Biodiesel plants: castor for B15 and B20

✔    Lubricants industry: aviation castor

✔    Distributors: castor oil for the industrial market

✔    Bioplastic producers: castor as raw material

Growth strategies for the local trader

The castor cooperative that refines oil for cosmetic use and sells directly to natural cosmetics industries multiplies the value per kg by 3 to 5 times over raw oil — and the refining cost is low with simple equipment.

The BNB/FNE and PRONAF Mamona cover production and processing. Pronampe finances refiners.

The E-Book 04 — Strategic Guide for the Small Agricultural Product Trader maps 30 trader profiles and details growth opportunities in all 255 segments of agro.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →
