Paricá and Native Species: Economic Reforestation in the Amazon with Double Return

October 02, 20266 min read

The paricá (Schizolobium amazonicum) is the fastest-growing native Amazon species — reaching 20 to 30 m³/ha/year, with a cycle of 7 to 10 years, and lightweight wood with high demand for LVL (laminated veneer lumber), plywood, and matchsticks. It is the basis of the timber hub of Paragominas-PA, the largest certified wood hub in the world.

Reforestation with native Amazon species — paricá, African mahogany, Australian cedar, freijó — is the model that combines economic return with environmental recovery, opening access to the carbon credit market and BNDES Fundo Verde. It is the fastest-growing segment of Brazilian forestry.

When paricá and native species are planted with technical assistance and certification, this segment can greatly contribute to job and income generation in Brazil.

Join our strategic actions for the implementation of the best solutions in the Brazilian agricultural sector. Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover 20 chains and the 255 segments of the national agro — from the grain chain to sustainable extraction, passing through horticulture, fruit growing, livestock, and much more.

The series Innovation For Brazil to Produce More was developed specifically to identify and implement the best solutions available in Brazil and worldwide, across the 255 segments of the agricultural sector — with accessible technical language, updated data, and a focus on practical results for those who produce, supply, govern, and trade.

1.  Opportunities for Small Rural Producers

How to structure reforestation with paricá and natives for maximum return

Paricá requires medium to high fertility soil and precipitation above 1,800mm — typical conditions in Pará, Maranhão, and Rondônia. A spacing of 3×3m to 4×4m with thinning at 4 years is the most productive system.

✔    Paricá: cycle of 7 to 10 years; 20 to 30 m³/ha/year — lightweight wood of high industrial use

✔    African mahogany: cycle of 12 to 15 years; noble wood for export

✔    Mixed planting with natives — agroforestry systems with BNDES Fundo Verde

✔    FSC Certification — access to premium markets and carbon credits

✔    BNDES Fundo Verde and Amazon Fund for natives

The E-Book 01 — Strategic Manual for the Small Rural Producer presents, in detail, the best solutions for this segment and the other 254 of Brazilian agro — focusing on method, cost reduction, and progressive growth from Agro 1.0 to Agro 6.0.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

2.  Opportunities for Micro and Small Local Suppliers

What equipment and services do natives demand

Reforestation with natives demands certified nurseries, specialized harvesting, and processing — growing markets with the expansion of reforestation programs.

Solutions by area of engineering applied to the segment

Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover six major areas of engineering — and the chain demands solutions in all of them:

Electrical Engineering and Computing — monitoring systems for natives;

Electronic Engineering and IoT — sensors and drones for inventory;

Control and Automation Engineering — harvesters for native species;

Mechatronic Engineering and Robotics — laminators and LVL for paricá;

Renewable Energy Engineering — biomass from native species;

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence — blockchain traceability of natives.

3.  Opportunities for Municipal Governments

How the municipality can support reforestation with natives

Reforestation with native species is the best way to combine income and environmental recovery — and municipalities with degraded areas have increasing incentives from BNDES and the federal government.

✔    Municipal reforestation program with paricá and natives

✔    Municipal nursery of native species for distribution

✔    Municipal IDM: hectares of native reforested as an environmental indicator

✔    Municipal carbon credits for reforestation

✔    BNDES Fundo Verde for municipal projects of natives

The E-Book 03 — Reference Guide for Municipal Governments presents the step-by-step for municipal secretaries and managers to implement effective public policies for the 255 segments of agro.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

4.  Opportunities for Small Agricultural Product Merchants

How paricá and natives generate business for nurseries and the carbon credit industry

The market for paricá and African mahogany seedlings is growing at 30% per year with the expansion of reforestation programs. Nurseries that produce certified seedlings with genetic traceability have preferential access to large reforestation projects by BNDES.

The carbon credit from native forest generates between R$ 30 and R$ 100/tCO₂ certified — a complementary revenue that can represent 20 to 40% of the value of wood at harvest. For projects between 1,000 and 5,000 ha, carbon credit can be the main product.

Products with high commercial potential

The main products derived from this segment for local retail and foodservice:

Certified paricá seedlings — 30%/year growth market;

Paricá wood for LVL — high-demand industry;

African mahogany for export — noble wood of high value;

Carbon credits from natives — R$ 30 to R$ 100/tCO₂;

FSC Certification for natives — access to premium market;

Reforestation consulting — high-value, growing service.

Merchant profiles and their specific opportunities

✔    Forest nurseries: certified seedlings of Amazon natives

✔    Carbon consultants: REDD+ projects and reforestation

✔    LVL industry: paricá as raw material

✔    Exporters: African mahogany and natives to Europe

✔    BNDES Fundo Verde: financing for native projects

✔    FSC certifiers: auditing Amazon natives

Growth strategies for the local merchant

The reforestation project with natives that combines FSC + carbon credit + wood at harvest has three sources of revenue — and the carbon credit ensures positive returns from the first years, making the project attractive to investors even with a long cycle.

The BNDES Fundo Verde and the Amazon Fund finance natives. The BASA supports in the North.
