Soybean: Refined Oil, Lecithin, and Meal — How Processing Multiplies Value

October 02, 20266 min read

Soybean is the largest oilseed in Brazil — with over 160 million tons produced annually — but most of the value is captured by industrial processing: crushing into refined oil, protein meal, and lecithin. A soybean grain at R$ 120/bag of 60 kg turns into products worth R$ 200 to R$ 250 when processed. The difference is entirely from the industrial link.

The market for premium soybean oil — cold-pressed, organic, and non-GMO — is growing 25% per year in Brazil, and soy lecithin has increasing demand in chocolates, food emulsifiers, and nutraceutical capsules. For the producer who integrates processing, the return per ton can be 60 to 80% higher than selling grains.

When soy is processed into refined oil, meal, and lecithin with identity of origin, this segment can significantly contribute to job and income generation in Brazil.

Join our strategic actions to implement the best solutions in the Brazilian agricultural sector. Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover 20 chains and 255 segments of the national agro — from the grains chain to sustainable extractivism, passing through horticulture, fruit growing, livestock, and much more.

The series Innovation for Brazil to Produce More was developed precisely to identify and implement the best solutions available in Brazil and the world, across the 255 segments of the agricultural sector — with accessible technical language, updated data, and a focus on practical results for producers, suppliers, policymakers, and marketers.

1.  Opportunities for Small Rural Producers

How to structure soybean processing to capture higher value

Soybean processing begins with the expeller press or hexane extractor — the cold press has a lower cost and produces oil of higher sensory quality; the industrial extractor has greater yield. The residual meal has a protein content of 44 to 48%, essential for animal feed.

✔    Small-scale expeller press — high-quality cold-pressed oil

✔    Certified non-GMO soybean — a premium of 20 to 40% in the European market

✔    Certified organic soybean — a premium of 50 to 100%

✔    Lecithin: byproduct of oil degumming; high value in chocolates

✔    PRONAF and BNDES for mini-crushing plants

The E-Book 01 — Strategic Manual for Small Rural Producers presents, in detail, the best solutions for this segment and 254 others in the Brazilian agro — focusing on method, cost reduction, and progressive growth from Agro 1.0 to Agro 6.0.   Access now for BRL 99.00 →

2.  Opportunities for Micro and Small Local Suppliers

What equipment does the soybean processing chain demand

The soybean processing chain requires expeller presses, degummers and refiners — available in mini-plant scales from R$ 50,000 to R$ 500,000.

Solutions by area of engineering applied to the segment

Our activities, studies, and advanced research cover six major areas of engineering — and the chain requires solutions in all of them:

Electrical and Computer Engineering — automation of mini soybean oil plants;

Electronic Engineering and IoT — sensors for oil quality and protein in the meal;

Control and Automation Engineering — automated expeller presses and extractors;

Mechatronic and Robotic Engineering — refiners, degummers, and fillers;

Renewable Energy Engineering — solar for mini-crushing plants;

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence — non-GMO and organic traceability.

✔    Expeller presses for cold-pressed soybean oil

✔    Soybean oil refiners

✔    Fillers for oil in premium packaging

✔    Non-GMO and organic certification

✔    Mini-lecithin extraction plants

The E-Book 02 — Strategic Guide for the Micro and Small Local Supplier maps, segment by segment, the business opportunities — focusing on IoT, energy, automation, and specialized technical services.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

3.  Opportunities for Municipal Governments

How municipalities can support soybean processing and retain value

The soybean-producing municipality that supports the local mini-oil plant retains the value of processing that currently goes to the large crushing companies in industrial centers.

✔    Cooperatively-operated mini-oil plant for local producers

✔    Organic and non-GMO soybean program for export

✔    Municipal IDM: locally processed soybean as an indicator

✔    PNAE with local organic soybean oil for school meals

✔    Partnership with chocolatiers for local soy lecithin

The E-Book 03 — Reference Guide for Municipal Governments presents step-by-step instructions for secretaries and municipal managers to implement effective public policies for the 255 segments of agro.  Access now for BRL 99.00 →

4.  Opportunities for Small Agricultural Product Retailers

How soybean processing generates business for oil distributors and chocolatiers

The organic cold-pressed soybean oil in glass bottles reaches R$ 25 to R$ 45/liter vs. R$ 6 to R$ 8 for industrial refined oil. It is the product with the highest value differential from soybean processing for the premium market.

The organic soy lecithin has a growing market in the chocolate industry, natural products, and nutraceutical capsules — with prices ranging from R$ 20 to R$ 50/kg compared to R$ 5 to R$ 8 for conventional lecithin.

Products with high commercial potential

The main products derived from this segment for local retail and foodservice:

Organic cold-pressed soybean oil— R$ 25 to R$ 45/L; premium retail;

Non-GMO soybean oil for export— a premium of 20 to 40%;

Organic soy lecithin— chocolates and nutraceuticals;

Organic soy meal— premium feed for organics;

Artisanal roasted soy— a growing functional snack;

Organic textured soy protein— plant-based market.

Merchant profiles and their specific opportunities

✔    Mini-oil plants: cold-pressed soy for premium retail

✔    Chocolatiers: organic lecithin for premium chocolate

✔    Distributors: non-GMO soybean oil for Europe

✔    Feed industry: organic meal for certified livestock

✔    Delis: premium oil and artisanal roasted soy

✔    Digital platforms: organic oil by subscription

Growth strategies for local merchants

The mini-plant that combines premium oil + lecithin + protein meal processes 100% of the soy without waste — and each coproduct has its market. The meal feeds organic animals that produce premium meat, closing a high-value bioeconomy cycle.

The PRONAF and BNDES cover mini-plants. The Pronampe finances processors and distributors. SEBRAE subsidizes certification.
